Adaptive Cooking Class

We have exciting news!

Our occupational therapist, Rachel Dinoff, will be holding a virtual 4 part interactive course on adaptive cooking. This group is for anyone who experiences barriers to cooking, including but not limited to individuals with neurological conditions, amputations, arthritis, and chronic pain, and caregivers.

Each lesson plan will include a healthy recipe, and focus on a particular set of barriers to cooking. Learn about adaptive cooking strategies to apply knowledge to healthy recipes!

Best Practice Day at Life Skills Therapy was facilitated by our occupational therapist, Fion. Life Skills Therapy hosted a booth at the Health and Wellness Fair at Laurel Place in Surrey on May 3rd. Our founder Amit Kumar was a guest speaker at the event and gave some useful tips on maintaining and improving cognitive abilities. The fair was attended by over a 100 people. Life Skills Therapy at Fraser Valley Brain Injury Golf Classic

Working with Stroke Survivors: How to Maximize their Potential

Life Skills Therapy and Neurofunction Rehab successfully hosted our three-part workshop for rehab professionals working with stroke survivors. The workshops were jointly presented by Amit Kumar, OT; and Veronika Vlckova, Physiotherapist at Neurofunction Rehab. Over 25 rehab professionals attended the workshops. The workshops were well received, and encouraged therapists to think outside the box.

The workshop is aimed at Kinesiologists, Physiotherapists and Occupational Therapists who want to learn and improve their handling skills to ensure a safe therapeutic environment for neurological impaired clientele.

Life Skills Therapy at BC Care Providers Association Conference

Amit Kumar, Director, Life Skills Therapy; Giovanna Boniface, National Director of Professional Affairs, CAOT; and Michelle Whitehouse, Director of Care, Zion Park presented a workshop titled “Enhancing & Improving Health Outcomes of Your Residents: A Collaborative Approach to Support Quality Care", at BC Care Providers Association (BCCPA) Annual Conference in Whistler, BC. The workshop was well received, and highlighted how collaboration between an occupational therapy provider and a residential care facility can improve quality of life outcomes for residents. Complex Care Facility Contract Awarded

We are pleased to announce that we have been awarded a service contract for occupational and kinesiology services by Zion Park Manor, a complex care facility. Services under this contract are targeted at wheelchair seating, positioning, designing exercise rooms, equipment recommendation, transfer and lift assessment, functional training, and overseeing the 99 bed facility.

Stroke group therapy program a big success

Our 10 week upper extremity group therapy program was successfully completed on June 16 with a surprise potluck lunch organized by our participants. Kudos to the stroke survivors for their active and enthusiastic participation in this program. We now look forward to the lower extremity group program.

PGAP now available at Life Skills Therapy

As part of our commitment to quality and to provide evidence based practice, our therapists are now trained in PGAP (Progressive Goal Attainment Program). PGAP is a 10 week standardized evidence-based intervention program for reducing disability associated with pain, depression, cancer and other chronic health conditions. We are pleased to announce that three of our occupational therapists are now certified BrainFx 360 administrators. “BrainFx 360 is a new, comprehensive, standardized, research-based digital assessment tool that is designed to measure the functional impact of mild to moderate brain injury or disorder” (BrainFx.com). Kinesiology/Rehab Assistant services now available at Life Skills Therapy

We are excited to now offer kinesiology/rehab assistant services. Our kinesiologists are fully registered with BCAK and carry comprehensive liability insurance. Our kinesiologists support our own results oriented rehabilitation programs, as well as are available to external organizations. Our kinesiologists/rehab assistants speak Punjabi, Hindi, Serbian, Croatian, and Korean. Services are offered throughout Lower Mainland. Here is a picture of the team:

Amit Kumar was invited as a guest speaker by the organizers of South Asian Health Expo in Surrey. Amit spoke about occupational therapy in bone health at the South Asian Health Expo held on January 26, 2014 in Surrey which was attended by over 200 people.
